Week 4, lesson 4 Phoneme "igh" and Grapheme "igh" - Phonics Phase 3 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the fourth week and fourth lesson of Phase 3 phonics, students are introduced to the phoneme /igh/ and the corresponding grapheme
The lesson continues with a revisit to previously learned tricky words through a Quickdash activity, where children rapidly identify the words as they flash by. This is followed by teaching the new phoneme /igh/ with a story about the Ice Cream Feeling Supreme, designed to highlight the sound in a memorable context. Children then learn the action associated with the phoneme, extending an arm and repeating the sound. To practice, students are shown how to form the grapheme and are encouraged to trace it in the air and on a partner's back. Interactive activities such as decoding phrases and identifying the /igh/ sound within them help reinforce learning. The lesson concludes with hands-on application through mini whiteboard work, where children write the trigraph and dictated words, and extension activities that may include letter circling or using shaving foam for a sensory experience.
